Pamphlets by Author, Making the Argument for Independence, 1847-1972

In combination, these papers commence with the stated claim that Scotland has been subjugated under England, resulting in it being poorly governed into decline. They then argue that Parliament is unlikely to change this situation as it is too congested with laws to get many passed for Scotland and has a flawed representative system which yields too much control to the Party Whip. They then conclude that Scottish Home Rule is needed and is making substantial progress as a philosophy, while its return would also enable Scots to preserve their church and decide what their children should be taught. However, this combination of ideas necessarily excludes some of the nuance from the arguments which can be read here. Read more →

Official Publications of the Scottish National Party and Its Predecessor, 1928-1973

Commencing with pamphlets which explain who both the National Party of Scotland and the Scottish National Party are, these publications then offer a range of visions for what an independent Scotland might look like, from blue prints for specific areas of Scotland to Scottish infrastructure. Some content then describes issues facing Scotland in general and the Highlands in particular, before other items cover discussions upon how to address Scotland's problems via the minutes from a series of national conferences in the early 1970s. These papers then conclude with commemorative Bannockburn and William Wallace day pamphlets and assorted miscellany. Read more →

Calls for an Independent Scotland, 1853-1973

With a strong emphasis on visions for Scotland which involve it ceasing to be a part of the union, these pamphlets cover a wide range of concerns; from the Act of Union itself to rebel songs, culture, the Common Market and devolution. Frustration with England is also a core theme. This is explored through pamphlets addressing the perceived denial of Scottish rights, calls for a Scottish Parliament and the financial relations of Scotland with England. Content upon the Scottish Council of the Labour Party also features here, alongside that from the Scottish Secretariat. Other focal points include the treatment of the Highlands, religion and Scottish education. Read more →

Visions for the Future of Scotland, 1844-1973

Over the decades, many Scottish authors have explored the question of how an independent Scotland could actually be made to work. These pamphlets reveal the answers that many of them explored. An independent Scotland has been viewed as an opportunity for renewal, for the Scottish constitution and industry alike. These items commence with more general visions for what an independent Scotland would look like, before exploring the principles upon which an independent Scotland could form its constitution. The more detailed pamphlets explore various aspects of an independent Scottish Government's potential remit, from industry to the economy, education and science. A number of the pamphlets included here were written to address numerous questions about whether home rule could actually work, in a list-type format. Visions of independence from the Scottish Liberal party also feature, as do a few items on visions for devolution. Read more →
