    Description

This collection is drawn from the personal papers of Mark Sykes (1879-1919), a politician and diplomatic advisor famous for his role in the partition of the Middle East around the period of the First World War. He is best known for his role in the Sykes-Picot Agreement of 1916, which was a secret treaty between European powers that divided up the Ottoman Empire in the face of its impending collapse.

In addition to material related to the Sykes-Picot Agreement, the papers focus on Sykes’ experience in military intelligence and diplomacy in the Middle East, both before and during the First World War. This includes touching on such historic events like the Armenian genocide as well as international debates around Zionism and the creation of a Jewish homeland. As an avid explorer, of a more personal nature are his notebooks, which offer an insight into the experience of an aristocratic traveler in the Middle East during the early 20th century.

text 93 2 107 Just 7 line to let you know that I think things are going well as far as the Commission is concerned. I feel a little uneasy as to Clayton's position now that so senior a general as Money has come out and taken over the whole administration from Clayton. It is difficult to see quite how Clayton who is only A Brigadier can guide the policy of a senior Major-General like Money and I should have thought that the C.P.O should have been the Major-General and the Chief Military Administrator Storrs is doing very well indeed - but though they are all excellent men the other Governors are all Sudan or Gippy Army men whose experience in the Sudan does not make for a ready realization of the very wide questions of world policy which affect Palestine. One can't help noticing the ineradicable tendency of the Englishman who has lived in India or the Sudan to favour quite unconcious ly the Moslem both against Christian and Jew. Still thanks to Clayton for whom my admiration is continuously increased I think things are proceeding on sound lines. The Arabs are being very tiresome about Hebrew and are trying to get Arabic acknowledged as the only official language of the country. The Jaffa municipality which is Copy.
