    Description

This collection is drawn from the personal papers of Mark Sykes (1879-1919), a politician and diplomatic advisor famous for his role in the partition of the Middle East around the period of the First World War. He is best known for his role in the Sykes-Picot Agreement of 1916, which was a secret treaty between European powers that divided up the Ottoman Empire in the face of its impending collapse.

In addition to material related to the Sykes-Picot Agreement, the papers focus on Sykes’ experience in military intelligence and diplomacy in the Middle East, both before and during the First World War. This includes touching on such historic events like the Armenian genocide as well as international debates around Zionism and the creation of a Jewish homeland. As an avid explorer, of a more personal nature are his notebooks, which offer an insight into the experience of an aristocratic traveler in the Middle East during the early 20th century.

text HULL March 10/17 LIBRARY Memorandum on Mr Austin's Chamberlain's Amendment of the ment I have read the amended version, and I consider that it will be understood by the Arab Nationalist party to mean that Faghdad is to be a part of the Indian Empire, a prospect which would be abhorrent to them for a variety of reasons. The Arab is above all proud, he does not want favours If WE desire to get on with the Arabs we The difference between the two paragraphs is this, the original paragraph, if properly translated, will mean "If you suppor+ us you will be our equals in internal affairs which you will manage yourselves, if you do not we have a free hand" - The amendment means "Whether you behave well or ill we shall give you good treatment, but we shall settle your affairs for you" I am certain if we take the line of trying to rule Arabs as we rule Indians we shall fail. We shall introduce the social colour distinction and antagonise the whole Arab movement; we shall have the intellectuals against us from the very start, and it is the intellectuals who will rule public opinion when For the moment Paghdad is probably a stricken deserted city, and the proclamation will have little local effect, but the influence of the proclamation in Syria, Mesopotania, and Arabia, will I make no doubt be very great. Further it will force the hands of the French. M. Picot sincerely desires to work the Arah state, but he has repeatedly told me of the opposition to which he is subjected, by colonial expensionists who only desire to impose dominion by force on the Arabs. If we set up autonomy as our ideal we get the sympathy of every Arab nationalist, we make it almost impossible for the 36. 37 UNIVERSITY Proposed Proclamation to the people of Baghdad. must not patronize but we must be firm.
