OCR Search
OCR (Optical Character Recognition) text data is computer generated for our documents through an automated process. While we aim for the highest quality OCR possible, due to age and quality of the documents and accuracy of the algorithms used, text transcriptions are not always as accurate as we would like.
Single and multiple word searching is currently supported in OCR text searching for this viewer. Shorter, more common words may be ignored (e.g. 'and', 'if').
Exact phrase matching and boolean searching is also supported.
To phrase match, enclose your search terms in double quotes. For example, "world war".

Metadata Key Metadata Values Title The Collapse of the Ottoman Empire and the Partition of the Middle East, 1879–1919 Rights Images © 2009 published by Microform Academic Publishers with permission of Sir Tatton Sykes & Hull University Archives Description This collection is drawn from the personal papers of Mark Sykes (1879-1919), a politician and diplomatic advisor famous for his role in the partition of the Middle East around the period of the First World War. He is best known for his role in the Sykes-Picot Agreement of 1916, which was a secret treaty between European powers that divided up the Ottoman Empire in the face of its impending collapse.
In addition to material related to the Sykes-Picot Agreement, the papers focus on Sykes’ experience in military intelligence and diplomacy in the Middle East, both before and during the First World War. This includes touching on such historic events like the Armenian genocide as well as international debates around Zionism and the creation of a Jewish homeland. As an avid explorer, of a more personal nature are his notebooks, which offer an insight into the experience of an aristocratic traveler in the Middle East during the early 20th century.

With regard to propaganda, I would submit that one of the most essential forms of propaganda necessary to our political action in the middle East is the propagandasing of the British forces in Egypt and at Aden. as I receive from there show an utter want of enthusiasm or belief in the offensive, they have got into a state of permanent passivity, the do not believe that there will be an advance, they think only of the defensive or of departure. While making it quite clear that I do not suggest or even think of military operations, I submit that a spirit of preparation, mystery, and vitality should be fostered in Egypt. the state of mind of the mass of the British/in Egypt, is that if the Turks evacuated Syria we should not budge, Quite irrespective what actual decisions may be, opportunity we shall take advantage of it, and that we are only waiting for one. a better chance and the Turks will not feel that security born of contempt which at present gives them such freedom of action both political and military.
