See who fought for the British during Seven Years War and American revolution

These lists reveal where the British army regiments fought from the Seven Years War to the American Revolution. These detailed lists will assist those researching military regiments or trying to trace ancestors. The wars themselves are not covered here, but do feature in: American records in the House of Lords archive, 1621-1917. The American Revolution from a British Perspective, 1764-1783, and British Parliamentary History, 1102-1803 also cover this period. These soldiers' tours of duty include America, Antigua and Ireland, among other countries. The classes of soldier listed include officers, chaplains, adjutants, quartermasters, and surgeons. These Army lists are copies of the originals held at the Royal Artillery Insititution in London.

Insights

  • During the War of the Austrian Succession these lists include tallies of foreign soldiers, by their ranks within their armies. These tallies cover the armies of France, Hanover, and Denmark, as well as the Hessians.
  • These lists contain soldiers' names, ranks and regiments. The names of different regiments sometimes include the countries they served in.
  • These items reveal how the ranks of Irish soldiers and freed black men were arranged and paid. This enables the reader to compare their arrangement and their pay to English regiments over the years.
  • Colonels often 'swapped' between regiments to avoid less popular areas of operations. By comparing colonels' movements to known locations of the regiments they left, the reader might see which fronts were avoided.
