The C series letters, 1635-1812

Collection: America in Records from Colonial Missionaries, 1635-1928    Volumes    The C series letters, 1635-1812
This series consists mainly of original 18th century letters from the colonies. The reason why they were kept unbound in boxes is unknown.Included in the C series are 65 letters of acknowledgement, some with instructions, from Rev. Dr David Humphreys, Secretary to the SPG, to missionaries and others, dated 1731-1733. The series also includes 80 letters dated 1758-1782, which form the bulk of the SPG's correspondence relating to Georgia. Some letters will be found in duplicate, either within this series or in the contemporary A and B series. This is because of instructions from the Society to missionaries that a duplicate of each letter should follow in by another ship to ensure that, if one ship were lost, a copy would still reach London. A few of the documents have been rendered almost illegible by damp. In such cases a note states where a duplicate, if any, exists. The contents of Box 11, comprising chiefly copies of the internal New York correspondence of Charles Inglis, 1764-1789, have been omitted. The originals remain in the USA. Subsequent documents, relating Inglis' ministry as first bishop of Nova Scotia, from 1787 to 1816, appear in the USPG's Canadian archives (C/CAN/NS box 2).(N.B Any unnumbered, blank page in this series, usually the verso, has been omitted.)
