Notes
These ledgers, deposited in the archives of Barclays Bank, provide an insight into the accounts of a Jamaican sugar plantation in the 50 years leading up to the abolition of slavery in the West Indies in 1838. Revenues from sugar and rum are balanced against production costs, with detailed breakdowns of net gains and losses, including among the plantation's 400-strong slave population.
Accompanied by an introduction (ISBN 1851170359) by Dr Simon Smith, University of York, containing in-depth statistical analysis.
The letterbooks are also available on microfilm (ref. R97601).
