Notes

The miraculous survival of the letter books of two prosperous 18th century London merchants are of great importance to scholars of slavery and the sugar trade in Barbados and Jamaica. This publication includes the transcripts made by Richard Pares, which distil the eleven volumes of papers destroyed in the Blitz, together with an PDF version of the comprehensive introduction by Dr. S.D. Smith, University of York (ISBN 9781851170359 printed guide).
The letterbooks are also available on microfilm (ref. R97601).
