Notes

These ledgers, deposited in the archives of Barclays Bank, provide an insight into the accounts of a Jamaican sugar plantation in the 50 years leading up to the abolition of slavery in the West Indies in 1838. Revenues from sugar and rum are balanced against production costs, with detailed breakdowns of net gains and losses, including among the plantation's 400-strong slave population.
PDF version of an introduction by Dr S.D. Smith, University of York, is available online, containing an in-depth statistical analysis. (ISBN 185117074-6 printed guide).
This collection is also available on microfilm (ref. R97615).
