The Robert Liston papers, 1796-1801
Sir Robert Liston (1742-1836) was a distinguished career diplomat. He served as the British ambassador to the United States during the period 1796-1800. This volume contains Liston's personal and professional papers from his time in Philadelphia. The documents include summaries of dispatches sent to and received from the British foreign minister, William Grenville. There is also a wealth of material on Anglo-American relations, as well as American and British relations with France and Spain and the difficult issue of the American-Canadian border. The journals of Liston's wife, Henrietta Marchant, paint a fascinating picture of the life of a British diplomat in the late 18th century and offer an insight into the Liston's relationship with President George Washington.
