Colin Legum's Third World Reports 1982-1995

Collection: Reporting on Africa: From Apartheid to Pan-Africanism, 1949-1995    Volumes    Colin Legum's Third World Reports 1982-1995
A weekly background news analysis of developments in the Third World and of relations between the major world powers and Third World countries. A central theme of these reports is regime change through war and bloodshed. The civil wars in Ethiopia, Sudan, Burundi, Rwanda and Angola are followed or in some cases preceeded by peace talks. Meanwhile, 1984 sees a famine result in a food crisis that leaves hundreds of millions of Africans without enough food to eat. Namibia has its first election despite fears of candidates being assassinated and there is an attempt on the life of Colonel Gadafi. The coverage of this decade also covers South Africa's Transition from a state with minority rule and extensive restrictions upon its non-white population, to a state with it's first democratically elected President in 1994.
