The emergence of a sizeable and prosperous middle class in Britain posed problems for the Marxist-Leninist CPGB, as it meant the dwindling of their working class base. The Executive Committee decided to establish the "Commission on the Middle Classes" to “examine the position of the “Middle Classes” in relation to our policy of building up a broad popular alliance”. it sought to build on the work of the “British Road.”
