Today (17/01/2022) the U.S. remembers Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Dr. King was a leader of the civil rights movement in the U.S.In 1955 he led the Montgomery bus boycott, which lasted 382 days, and ended segregation on buses. Between 1957 and 1968 he traveled over six million miles and spoke over twenty-five hundred times, fighting injustice, and supporting multiple causes.
On April 4th, 1968, he was assassinated in Memphis Tennessee. He'd been meant to lead a protest march in sympathy with the striking garbage workers of the city.Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was an activist against injustice, and today we remember him, and his life that was ended too soon.
Though many of us are tempted to think that the struggle for civil rights took place long ago, the reality is that most of us know more than one person who was alive during the civil rights movement. We have therefore decided to post a colour photo of Dr. King, rather than the vast majority which are in black and white. He is not removed from our present, and would be in his 90s today, had he not been shot.
