British Online Archives is pleased to announce the complete iteration of our collection The East India Company: Laying the Foundations for British Colonial Domination of India, 1752-1774. This collection is the first in our India under Colonial Rule, 1752-1933 series and explores how Britain’s East India Company systematically expanded their commercial and political power on the Indian subcontinent.
The collection is drawn from the personal papers of two key military employees of the East India Company, Colonel Robert Clive and General-Brigadier John Carnac. These two men contributed heavily to British East India Company victories over both native Mughal rulers and European rivals, helping establish Britain’s power base in the region. The brutal and corrupt rule of the East India Company would eventually culminate in the establishment of the British Raj in 1858.
Included in the updated collection is a brand-new landing page, new highlights demonstrating the best of the collection and new insights providing more information on the nature of the material.Furthermore, a contextual essay giving a concise but essential history of the activities of the East India Company during the 18thcentury has been attached.
