Notes

Edited and introduced by Dr David Renton, this recent publication contains a rich collection of memoirs, accounts, correspondence, etc., reflecting the tensions in Britain both for and against the wave of fascist as it spread through Europe in the politically turbulent 1930s.
Drawn from materials the archives of the Imperial War Museum in London, the collection includes the correspondence of Captain H.W. Luttman-Johnson, one of the founders of the pro-Nazi 'January Club'. Also among the pro-fascist papers are William Joyce, the British Union of Fascists' Director of Propaganda, J. Macnab and R. Ling, as well as the manuscript of Margaret Heard's book, 'Stepping stones to Austria', describing her life as the wife of an interned half-German member of the BUF.
The anti-fascist experience is represented by 'The suitcase in the garage', Kenneth Ambrose's first-person account of a Jewish family's life and flight from Germany, and by the collected papers of Mary Sibthorpe, secretary of the Friendly Aliens Protection Committee and later Honorary Secretary of the National Committee for Rescue from Nazi Terror.

Also available selectively as part of the online resource: The British Union of Fascists : newspapers and secret files.
