Notes
Covers 1884-1914 and 1919-1922. During the second half of the 19th century, at a time when, in Europe, the passion for Africa was at its height, this publication appeared in Belgium. It gives a graphic account of the discovery of Central Africa by explorers, travellers and geographers. It also describes in vivid detail the fall of Khartoum and the search for Emin-Pacha. Held in high regard not only for the quality of its articles and its illustrations but also for the seriousness of the geographical analyses, it represents the imperialist conquest of Congo during King Leopold II's reign. It became the popular organ of conquest, and provides a graphic account of the discovery of Central Africa by explorers and geographers.
