Notes

The minutes and letter books of the Association provide an important source of primary information about the efforts of British manufacturers and merchants to gain access to trading areas prohibited to them by what they regarded as outdated capitalist legislation, protecting the interests of the East India Company.
These documents also record the methods used in attempting to influence the outcome of parliamentary proceedings, indicating the widespread co-operation achieved between companies in Scotland and England on matters of mutual interest.
More successful commercially were the activities of Glasgow's West India Association, whose minutes are also published (ref. R97531).
