Notes
At beginning of the American Civil War, the non-fighting public expressed a desire to contribute to the cause. Through the co-ordinated efforts of a small group of medics and churchmen, a Commission of Inquiry and Advice was established. This collection includes their inquiry into the condition and needs of troops, from nursing to diet and cleanliness, together with the Commission's twice weekly bulletins, which began in 1863, reaching a circulation of 15,000 by the end of the war.
