Notes

Political and official papers of Sir Charles Wood, 1st Viscount Halifax. He entered parliament in 1826, and in 1832 was appointed Private Secretary to the Treasury in the administration of the 2nd Earl Grey. Later he took on responsibility for Indian affairs, becoming President of the East India Company's Board of Control in January 1853 through to 1855, when the company's charter of 1833 was almost at an end and during the run-up to the governorship-general of Canning, whose Indian papers are published in the Records of the Raj series.
While heavily slanted towards Britain's government of India in the mid-19th century, the papers also include valuable documents on the Crimean War, naval reform, Cabinet organisation, and Anglo-American relations.
Introductory notes and reel contents available online.
From the archives of the Earl of Halifax at Garrowby.
