Notes

The official and private correspondence of the Thynne family, comprising one of the largest collections at Longleat House, Bath. Consisting of 48 bound volumes and 70 boxes of unbound volumes of manuscripts, letters and and also miscellaneous books of accounts, legal documents and inventories, along with an index volume.
Perhaps the most important papers in the collection are those reflecting the political fortunes of the family; they include the correspondence of Sir John Thynne, builder of Longleat and Steward to the Duke of Somerset, which to some extent supplements the Seymour Papers at Longleat (also available on microfilm). Also included are the personal papers of Thomas Thynne, 1st Viscount Weymouth who inherited Longleat after the assassination of Thomas Thynne. The later volumes and boxes contain mainly accounts and papers relating to the Longleat estate, legal papers connected with the family and Proceedings of Manor Courts, bailiffs' accounts, household and other domestic accounts.
