A selection of letterbooks, sales and specification books, including diagrams and specifications for locomotives of James Nasmyth (1808-1890), the inventor of the steam hammer. Nasmyth, a native of Edinburgh, developed an early interest in the uses of steam. In 1827 he built a steam carriage for the Scottish Society of Arts and from 1828 to 1834 he worked with the London engineer, Henry Maudsley. In 1836 he opened the Bridgewater foundary near Manchester and began to develop steam hammers, the first of which was at work in Bolton by 1846. From the Central Library, Eccles, Manchester.
