Notes
Vols. 1-76 (1665-1800). The official publication of HM Government, which began as the Oxford gazette until the title changed when, after 23 issues, printing was transferred to London. Originally it published news, and was described in Pepys' diary as "very pretty, full of news and no folly in it."
For the whole of the 17th and most of the 18th century, it provided the main source of information for the national news carried by provincial newspapers, featuring inter alia government, military and civil appointments, honours lists, public, ecclesiastical, planning and legal notices, as well as announcements relating to bankruptcy, corporate insolvency and other financial matters.
Separate official government gazettes were later published for Scotland (the Edinburgh gazette) from 1699, and for Northern Ireland (the Belfast gazette) in 1921.
