Notes

Covering the years 1847-1918. Convocation is the ancient legislative assembly for the province of Canterbury, which since the 15th century met as two houses, the upper house of bishops, presided over by the archbishop of Canterbury, and the lower house of clergy who elected their own chairman. The Chronicles are the printed records of the proceedings of the newly-invigorated Convocations of the mid-nineteenth century. The proceedings are reported in full, often giving the full text of major speeches, together with resolutions and published reports. They are invaluable source material for the history of the modern Church of England before the advent of Synodical government. From Lambeth Palace Library.
