Notes

MAP brings together for the first time a multi-perspective series looking at those groups and individuals affected by the First World War. In addition to diaries written at the front, there are the records of those who resisted participation chiefly through the papers of the No-Conscription Fellowship and the Union of Democratic Control. The papers of Sir Esme Howard, 1863-1939 offer a diplomatic perspective given Howard's time as British Ambassador to Sweden during the war and his role as a prominent delegate at the Versailles Treaty in 1919. Finally, the papers of Spenser Wilkinson, 1881-1935 offer an academic viewpoint from one of Britain's most distinguished military historians.
