Notes
The 8 boxes of the C/CAN/GEN sub-series mainly comprises correspondence, although there are also some printed pamphlets, from the earliest period of SPG activity in Canada.
The first three boxes are concerned with Clergy Reserves, which were lands set aside for building churches and parsonage houses and other land from which the clergy could gain an income, for example plots of farming land. Boxes 4-6 contain documents dealing with the Canadian mission in general and home correspondence re the Canadian dioceses. The main area of concern is finance. The files of "Government correspondence" contain letters from the Government to the SPG most of which are concerned with grants of money made by the Government to the Society towards the cost of its work in Canada.
The last two boxes of this series contain correspondence and papers of the Upper Canada Clergy Society (UCCS), a missionary society which merged with SPG in 1840, becoming the Upper Canada Committee of SPG. The two series of documents C/CAN/QUE (UC) & C/CAN/TOR, relating to province and dioceses of present-day Ontario are reproduced separately.
The USPG archive is now held at the Rhodes House Library, Oxford.
