Focusing on Thompson's time as an army officer in the service of the East India Company to the west of the subcontinent, but most especially in the Persian Gulf, this publication comprises all the documents for the period 1818-1821 contained in series DTH/2 of Thompson's papers (reels 4-5 of the microfilm ed.), together with individual files selected from DTH/3-6.
Beginning with documents relating to his linguistic training and appointment as official interpreter, the selection covers in detail Thompson's leadership of the failed expedition of 1820 against the Bani Bu `Ali tribe of Ra's al-Khaymah, which resulted in his court-martial. Also included are correspondence, some in Arabic, with imam of Muscat and orders received from his military commanders in Bombay.
The entire fonds held by the Hull University Archives, Brynmor Jones Library, including his career in politics from 1828 as a campaigner in the Anti-Corn Law League, a parliamentary candidate and MP, is available on microfilm (ref. R50028).
