In the aftermath of the Second World War, several Western European nations sought to widen and deepen political and economic cooperation with one another. This volume contains records from three British government departments—the Board of Trade, Cabinet Office, and Treasury—concerning this process of European integration. 

The records, which cover the period 1945–1961, include materials on the European Coal and Steel Community (ESCS), European Free Trade Agreement (EFTA), and European Economic Community (EEC).
