Papers of the Barbados Committee, 1710–1842

Collection: The West Indies in Records from Colonial Missionaries, 1704-1950    Volumes    Papers of the Barbados Committee, 1710–1842

The Barbados committee of the SPG was established in 1710 and its records run until 1842. It was headed by the Archbishops of Canterbury and York, as well as the Bishop of London. It met frequently, at least once a month, and a sub-committee was set up by the mid-eighteenth century. These committees were concerned with everyday matters: Codrington College, the catechists, and the management and finances of the estates. The committees kept meticulous accounts and formal minutes of their meetings.
