    Description

This collection is drawn from the personal papers of Mark Sykes (1879-1919), a politician and diplomatic advisor famous for his role in the partition of the Middle East around the period of the First World War. He is best known for his role in the Sykes-Picot Agreement of 1916, which was a secret treaty between European powers that divided up the Ottoman Empire in the face of its impending collapse.

In addition to material related to the Sykes-Picot Agreement, the papers focus on Sykes’ experience in military intelligence and diplomacy in the Middle East, both before and during the First World War. This includes touching on such historic events like the Armenian genocide as well as international debates around Zionism and the creation of a Jewish homeland. As an avid explorer, of a more personal nature are his notebooks, which offer an insight into the experience of an aristocratic traveler in the Middle East during the early 20th century.

text HULL LIBRARY DDSY (2) 4/6 The whole way lay through UNIVERSITY Having wandered for ten hours On June 27th. 1906 I left London by the Orient Express to meet Mark at Sinope, and after spehding a few days at Therapia as the guest of the hospitable ambassador and lady O'Conor, proceeded to Sinope in the "Imogen". We had a very disagreeable tossing for 27 hours, but Captain Benson was so kind and so concerned at my sufferings that he made every effort to make the time pass as easily as possible. At last at 3 a. m. on July 5th we anchored off Sinope and Mark who had been sitting on a hill with a telescope looking for us, came on board. Sinope is a very picturesque town situated on the narrow neck of a small isthmus surrounded by old and crumbling walls. We spent the day inspecting all of beauty and interest that was to be found in the town, we were shown over the prison where over 900 prisoners were guarded by twelve men old men armed with sticks. We dined on board the "Imogen" and that night she left. Though the Yacht had departed we never lost the glory attached to my arrival and the interest caused by Captain Benson walking about with us in nis uniform, a large sword under his arm, indeed to this alone can we attribute all the honours showered upon us by the Turkish officials during almost the whole of our journey. Mark had hired a Greek house in the town but after one night spent in it we were driven to our tents by swarms of bugs and fleas that energed from every crevass in the wallsi After camping a few days on the headland of the little peninsular in a beautiful spot high up above the sea, we started off about 6 a.m. on the 9th of July towards Istifan. dense forests, in many parts the trees were very fine, I noticed Elms, Beeches and Birch trees. in these entrancing woods we suddenly came upon an empty space in the midst of which stood a strange looking house built on four wooden legs, a sound of shrill voices and many little heads thrust out to look at us, proclaimed it a school the master came
